Wish # 4

We wish more Welly kids could safely get themselves to school every day ‘cause it’s good for their brains + bodies! 🏃🏽‍♂️🏃🏼‍♀️🚴🏼‍♂️🚴🏿‍♀️
A 2013 survey of 20,000 kids in Denmark found a link between kids who walk or bike and concentration.. and that positive effect lasted for 4 hours.

Wish # 5

We wish Wellington… had more city streets on a“road diet” this summer! Or how about permanently? Let’s use our sunny city spaces for people, for life!

Here’s Taranaki Street on a road diet earlier in spring – and no traffic flow was halted and no road rage was incited! LOOK at all the sunny street space folks! How lovely that would be with seating, plants, space for bikes…

Wish # 6

We wish that all Welly folks had a ‘third place’ in our lives!
They’re the places that aren’t home or work/school, places we can get to easily day to day, that are free, welcoming, with no expectations and no strings attached. A place to be and connect with community.

We  wish for more Rori Iti! Little roads! For our bikes, boards and scooters – any people-powered or e-powered small wheelie rides.

Wish # 8

We wish for a Welly… that’s easier and safer to get around in a wheelchair. Talk Welly crew members have noticed that Upper Hutt has smoother well-designed curb cuts compared to Welly CBD!

And while we’re at it, more accessible housing please! Here’s hoping at least the Govt Kiwibuild new apartments in Wellington and Porirua will be accessible for all.

Wish # 9

We wish for Welly… no more poop overflows to our harbours and seas 😵💩

Our existing wastewater networks are designed to have several “overflows” every year (read: raw sewage coming out, and being all up around our feet and in our harbours!) otherwise they’re deemed to be over-engineered and “gold plated”. With a brand new suburb being developed for Stebbings Valley let’s do it better!!

We wish Welly (& Aotearoa) would slow down – to live.
It definitely feels like we’re starting to have the conversations about “are we driving too fast?” At last – and at the cost of more and more lives – we’re starting to talk about it.
